Estaminet Le Beffroi

Tucked behind the town hall belfry on Rue de l'Église, Le Beffroi is the kind of estaminet — a traditional Flemish pub-restaurant — that locals fiercely guard from tourist-guide exposure. Dark wood, mismatched chairs and the smell of slow-braised beef make it unmistakably the real thing.

What to Order

The carbonnade flamande — beef braised for hours in local dark ale with a thick slice of mustard-spread bread laid on top — is the dish to order. It arrives in a cast-iron pot with a mountain of hand-cut frites cooked in beef dripping, and it is one of the most satisfying plates of food in northern France.

Waterzooi, the Flemish chicken or fish stew in a cream and vegetable broth, is a lighter but equally authentic choice. Wash either down with a Trois Monts or a Bière des Flandres on draught — both brewed within 30 km of your table.

The Atmosphere

Lunch service is busy with workers from the port and the mairie; dinner is quieter and more relaxed. The chalkboard menu changes with the season and the market, so the asparagus gratin in May and the mussel pot in September are worth timing your visit around.

The cheese board leans heavily on regional varieties — maroilles, vieux Boulogne and mimolette — and the tarte au sucre for dessert is a Flemish institution: a yeasted pastry base loaded with brown sugar and butter that is simultaneously too much and not enough.

Booking and Practicalities

Reservations are strongly advised for Saturday lunch and any Friday evening. The restaurant is cash-preferred though cards are accepted. It seats around 40 covers and the owner, who often serves tables himself, speaks enough English to guide you through the menu.

Le Beffroi is a 7-minute walk from Dunkirk train station and sits next to the 16th-century belfry, itself a UNESCO-listed monument, so you can combine a meal with a quick look at one of the city's most elegant landmarks.
