The museum occupies a real German command post dug into the dunes at Zuydcoote, just east of the town centre, giving every display an eerie authenticity that purpose-built halls simply cannot match.
Scale models of the beaches and the armada of 'little ships' make the logistics of the evacuation viscerally clear, while a looping archive film — much of it original 1940 footage — puts faces to the statistics.
