Château de Commarque
Most visitors to the Vézère Valley spend their days at Lascaux and Les Eyzies, never suspecting that a ruined 12th-century castle complex lies half-consumed by oak forest just a few kilometres away. Château de Commarque is one of the Dordogne's best-kept secrets — a ghost village of noble houses, a keep and a troglodyte chapel carved into the living rock beneath.
A medieval world reclaimed by nature
Abandoned in the 17th century and left to the forest for three hundred years, Commarque was so thoroughly swallowed by vegetation that it was essentially rediscovered in the early 20th century. The current owner, Hubert de Commarque, has spent decades carefully excavating and stabilising the ruins — work that continues today and which visitors can sometimes observe in progress.
The site encompasses a feudal village of at least eight noble family residences, a Templar chapel, a fortified mill and a towering keep that you can climb for views over an untouched valley. Below the castle, archaeologists have found prehistoric engravings in the cave at the base of the cliff, linking the site to the same Cro-Magnon culture that painted Lascaux.
Visiting the site
Access is on foot only, via a 15-minute walk through oak woodland from the car park — part of the charm. Guided tours in French and English run throughout the day in summer and bring the complex's layered history to vivid life. The combination of Romanesque stonework, forest silence and the knowledge that cave art lies beneath your feet is quietly overwhelming.
Because it sits off the main tourist circuit, Commarque rarely feels crowded even in August. Bring sturdy shoes — the paths through the ruins are uneven — and allow at least two hours to do the site justice.
