Téléphérique de Rochebrune, Megève
The Rochebrune cable car above Megève has been whisking passengers skyward since 1933, making it one of the oldest functioning aerial tramways in the Alps. The ride itself — two red wooden cabins, original oak panelling — is a piece of living history, and the ridge it delivers you to is spectacular in every season.
The Ride & The Ridge
The lower station sits at the edge of Megève village, a 10-minute walk from the main square. The original 1933 cabins have been maintained and lightly modernised for safety but retain their wooden benches and period feel — a stark, wonderful contrast to the plastic-and-steel gondolas of modern ski resorts.
At the top (1755 m), a broad sunny terrace faces the full Mont Blanc massif across the valley. In summer, hiking trails fan out along the Rochebrune ridge toward the Croix des Salles and further into the Aravis; in winter the same terrain becomes a quieter, more family-friendly alternative to the main Megève ski area.
Summer vs Winter Visit
In July and August the summit restaurant — a proper stone-and-timber chalet — serves Savoyard lunches on a terrace where you can eat tartiflette with a direct view of the Bionnassay glacier. The combination of good food, historic infrastructure and world-class scenery at moderate altitude (no acclimatisation needed) makes this one of the most accessible alpine highs in the region.
In winter, the Rochebrune sector links into the broader Megève ski area via the Côte 2000 connection, but many visitors use the cable car simply to reach the summit terrace for a vin chaud and a view — no skis required.
