Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) at Dawn
Lago di Braies is no secret — its turquoise waters and red rowing boats backed by the Seekofel peak have made it one of the most Instagrammed lakes in the Alps. But arrive before 7 am and you will have the entire shoreline to yourself, the water mirror-flat and the mountains glowing in the first light.
Getting There Early
The lake is in the Braies valley (Val di Braies) in the eastern Dolomites, about 35 km from Brunico. From mid-June to mid-October the access road is closed to private cars between 9 am and 4 pm; a shuttle bus runs from Monguelfo-Tesido station. The trick is to drive up before 9 am, park in the fee car park (€8/day), walk the 3.5 km lake loop before the shuttle buses arrive, and leave satisfied before noon.
The loop trail around the lake takes about 75 minutes at a gentle pace and is almost entirely flat. The far end of the lake, away from the hotel, is where the reflections are most perfect and where you are most likely to spot trout moving in the impossibly clear water.
Rowing and the Valley Beyond
Rent one of the iconic red wooden rowing boats from the Hotel Pragser Wildsee jetty (open from 9 am, roughly €14 for 30 minutes) and paddle out to the centre of the lake for the perspective that no shore photograph can replicate. The hotel itself, a grand 1899 lakeside inn, serves excellent Kaffee und Kuchen on its terrace from mid-morning.
Above the lake, a marked trail climbs steeply to the Seekofel refuge and beyond into the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park — one of the quietest and most rewarding multi-day hiking areas in the Dolomites, connecting eventually to the Fanes plateau where Ladin legend says the ancient kingdom of the Fanes once stood.
