Bolzano Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt)
Piazza Walther in the heart of Bolzano transforms each December into one of the oldest and most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Alps, blending Italian warmth with deep South Tyrolean tradition. Glühwein, hand-carved wooden toys and the scent of roasting chestnuts fill the medieval arcades.
What to Buy and Taste
The market's 80-plus wooden stalls are stocked with genuinely local craft: hand-painted glass baubles from Val Gardena woodcarvers, beeswax candles, felt slippers and the region's famous Zelten fruit bread studded with figs and walnuts. This is not a generic trinket market — artisans often work at their stalls and will explain their craft in a mix of Italian and German.
For food, seek out the stalls selling Strauben (spiral fried pastry dusted with icing sugar), roasted Marroni chestnuts and cups of hot spiced Glühwein or the non-alcoholic Kinderpunsch. Pair a Zelten slice with a shot of local Williams pear grappa for a very Tyrolean afternoon.
The City Around the Market
Bolzano itself deserves a half-day beyond the stalls: the Gothic Cathedral of Maria Assunta anchors the piazza, and the covered arcades of Via dei Portici are lined with independent delis selling local Speck IGP, aged Graukäse and Lagrein wine. The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology on Via Museo is home to Ötzi the Iceman — the 5,300-year-old mummy found in the nearby Alps — and is unmissable year-round.
A ten-minute cable car ride from the city centre whisks you up to the Renon plateau village of Soprabolzano, where in winter you can walk among snow-dusted earth pyramids — bizarre natural rock columns that look like something from another planet.
