Marché du Samedi on Place Nationale

Every Saturday morning, Dieppe's Place Nationale and the surrounding streets erupt into one of the liveliest weekly markets in Upper Normandy. Stalls groan with Neufchâtel cheese, fresh cider, line-caught sole and the famous Dieppe scallops — a sensory overload in the best possible way.

What to buy and eat

Arrive before 9 am to beat the crowds and secure a wedge of heart-shaped Neufchâtel, Normandy's oldest AOC cheese. The fishmongers arrive directly from the morning auction at the port, so the seafood — coquilles Saint-Jacques, mussels, herring — is as fresh as it gets anywhere in France.

Pick up a bottle of local apple cider or calvados from the farm stalls on the south side of the square. Several producers drive in from the Pays de Caux hinterland and are happy to let you taste before you buy.

The market's historic setting

The Place Nationale is framed by the 17th-century church of Saint-Jacques, whose flamboyant Gothic tower looms photogenically over the cheese and bread stalls. The square was rebuilt after the 1694 bombardment in a uniform stone style that gives the market a stage-set grandeur.

After shopping, duck into the covered Halles nearby for a coffee and a pain au chocolat at one of the small café counters — a ritual for local regulars that visitors are warmly welcomed into.
