Ciudad Encantada Natural Monument

Thirty kilometres north of Cuenca, the Ciudad Encantada (Enchanted City) is a 20-hectare labyrinth of limestone formations sculpted by 90 million years of erosion into shapes so improbable — a mushroom, a sea of stone, a Roman bridge — that the site feels genuinely otherworldly. It is one of the most distinctive natural landscapes in inland Spain.

The formations and the walk

A well-marked circular trail of about 3 km winds between the major formations, each given a descriptive name: El Tobogán (a smooth curved chute of rock), El Puente Romano (a natural arch spanning a gully), Los Enamorados (two rocks leaning together like figures embracing). The rock is Cretaceous freshwater limestone, and its pale grey-white surface catches the light beautifully in all seasons.

The circuit takes 60–90 minutes at a relaxed pace. The terrain is uneven but manageable for most walkers; wear closed shoes. The forest of black pine surrounding the formations adds a deep green backdrop that makes the white rock glow in photographs.

When to go and practical details

Autumn is the most photogenic season: the pine forest turns and morning mist often settles between the formations before burning off by 10:00, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Spring brings wildflowers in the clearings. Avoid July and August midday heat — go early morning or late afternoon.

There is a small visitor centre with a café at the entrance, and a modest entry fee. The site is reached by the CM-2105 road from Cuenca; the drive through the Serranía de Cuenca pine forests is itself worth making.
