Cerro del Socorro Mirador
Climb or drive to the hilltop chapel of El Socorro on the opposite ridge from the old city and you will be rewarded with the single most complete panorama of Cuenca: the entire UNESCO-listed walled city, both gorges, and the patchwork of the La Mancha plateau stretching to the horizon. It is the view that travel photographers come back for.
The view that puts it all in context
From the Cerro del Socorro you can see simultaneously the Huécar gorge to the south and the Júcar gorge to the north, with the old city's cathedral tower, the Casas Colgadas and the city walls all framed together. No other single point gives you the full geography of Cuenca in one glance.
The small 18th-century hermitage chapel of Nuestra Señora del Socorro sits at the summit and is often open for a quiet moment inside. Locals come here on Sunday mornings; you are unlikely to encounter crowds even in high season.
Getting there and golden-hour tips
The mirador is about 2 km from the old town and reachable on foot via a marked path from the Barrio del Castillo, or by car via the CV-2101 road — there is a small free car park at the top. The walk takes around 25 minutes and passes through fragrant rosemary scrubland.
Visit at sunset in summer (around 21:00) when the warm light turns the limestone cliff faces orange and the city lights begin to flicker on below. Bring a picnic; there are no facilities at the top.
