Le Bistrot du Palais, Compiègne

Tucked on the Rue d'Ulm just a stone's throw from the château gates, Le Bistrot du Palais is the kind of reliably excellent neighbourhood restaurant that Compiègne locals guard jealously — a blackboard menu that changes with the market, generous portions and a wine list that punches above its price point. It is where you eat after the château, not a tourist trap beside it.

What to Order

The ficelle picarde — a Picardy crêpe filled with mushrooms, ham and crème fraîche, then gratinéed until bubbling — is the dish that defines the region, and the kitchen here does a particularly good version, properly rich and not drowned in sauce.

For main course, look for the andouillette de Compiègne when it appears on the blackboard: the local chitterling sausage is an acquired taste but an authentic one, best ordered with a glass of cool Chablis and a complete suspension of dietary caution.

Atmosphere and Booking

The room is small — perhaps ten tables — with bare stone walls, mismatched chairs and a chalkboard menu that a waiter reads aloud with genuine enthusiasm. Lunch is the better service: a two-course formule with a glass of wine costs around €18–22 and represents some of the best-value eating in the Oise département.

Booking ahead for weekend lunch is essential; on weekdays you can usually walk in, but arriving by noon secures the best table near the front window.

The Local Food Scene Around It

After lunch, explore the Rue Solférino where a fine chocolatier, Chocolaterie de Compiègne, sells handmade pralines and seasonal tablets — their dark chocolate with Picardy chicory is an unusual and genuinely delicious souvenir.

The Boulangerie Aux Délices du Palais on the same street bakes a superior pain de campagne and sells individual tarts to eat on the go.
