The Walk Up and the View
The most satisfying approach is on foot from the palace gardens: follow the central allée south, cross the Route Eugénie and take the marked path up through beech woodland for about 45 minutes until the trees suddenly open onto the grassy slope.
The view back towards the palace is best in late afternoon when the sandstone glows amber and the fountain catches the light. On clear days you can see the towers of Compiègne's Gothic church of Saint-Jacques rising above the rooftops beyond the palace.
Bring a picnic — there are benches at the top and the grass is perfect for spreading a blanket. On summer weekends locals do exactly this, making it feel delightfully lived-in rather than a tourist set piece.
Practical Details for Getting There
Drivers can park at the Carrefour des Beaux Monts on the Route du Belvédère and walk the final 10 minutes to the viewpoint, cutting the round trip considerably.
The clearing is also a popular spot for trail runners and dog walkers at weekends, so the path is well-maintained and easy to follow even without a detailed map.
