Marché de Compiègne (Place du Marché)
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the Place du Marché in the heart of the old town fills with stalls selling Picardy chicory, local cheeses, rotisserie chickens and seasonal vegetables piled high with the confidence of farmers who know their produce is excellent. It is the most honest slice of daily Compiègne life you will find.
What to Buy and Eat
Head straight for the cheese vendors and ask for Rollot, the pungent washed-rind disc from nearby Rollot village that rarely appears outside the Somme and Oise valleys — it is funky, creamy and utterly addictive on a baguette still warm from the boulangerie next door.
The rotisserie stalls do a roaring trade by 11am; a half-chicken with potatoes roasted in the dripping costs a few euros and makes an ideal impromptu picnic to carry into the forest.
The Market Atmosphere
The square is flanked by the ornate Hôtel de Ville with its Gothic belfry, so even standing in the queue for strawberries you are looking at a genuinely beautiful piece of French civic architecture.
Locals greet stallholders by name, dogs sit patiently under trestle tables, and the whole affair wraps up by 1pm — arrive before 10am for the best selection and a front-row seat to Compiègne at its most authentically itself.
Getting the Most from Your Visit
Combine the market with a stroll along the Rue Solférino and the Rue des Lombards, where independent bakers, chocolatiers and a fine wine merchant cluster within easy walking distance.
Bring a canvas bag and cash — most stallholders accept cards now, but small denominations keep things moving and earn you a warmer smile.
