Torre di Fontanedo (Fontanedo Tower)

Hidden in the hamlet of Fontanedo just above Colico, this solitary medieval watchtower is one of the least-visited historic monuments on Lake Como — yet it offers a quietly spectacular vantage point over the upper lake and a tangible connection to the medieval Lombard defensive network that once stretched the length of the shore.

Finding the Tower

The tower stands at roughly 300 metres above sea level on a rocky spur above the village of Fontanedo, reachable via a signed footpath from the Colico–Dorio road in about 25 minutes on foot.

Built in the early medieval period as part of a chain of signal towers communicating between Forte Montecchio and the Valtellina valley, it is remarkably intact — the cylindrical stone shaft rises about 12 metres and the views from the base are superb even without climbing.

Unlike the more famous Forte di Fuentes, you will almost certainly have this spot entirely to yourself, which makes it ideal for a quiet morning with a camera.

The Surrounding Hamlet

Fontanedo itself is a tiny cluster of stone houses with a Romanesque chapel (Sant'Eufemia) worth a quick look — the faded frescoes inside date to the 15th century and the door is usually unlocked during daylight hours.

The path continues beyond the tower into chestnut woodland and connects to a longer ridge trail toward Dorio, offering a half-day loop with lake views the whole way.

Stop at the single bar in Colico's lower town on your return — they make a house-pressed fruit juice using local apples that is quietly excellent.
