Kitesurfing & Windsurfing at Colico Beach
Colico sits at the northern end of Lake Como where the Tivano and Breva thermal winds funnel reliably down the valley every afternoon from spring to autumn, making it the undisputed wind-sports capital of the lake — a place where the beach is lined with colourful kites and sails and the water fizzes with energy from about 2 pm onwards.
Why Colico Has the Best Wind on the Lake
The geography is everything: the Valtellina and Valchiavenna valleys act as natural wind tunnels, channelling the afternoon Breva (a southerly thermal) and the morning Tivano (a northerly drainage wind) with a consistency that draws kitesurfers and windsurfers from across Europe.
The Breva typically builds from around 13:00–14:00 and peaks at 15–25 knots by mid-afternoon, making it ideal for intermediate and advanced riders. The Tivano is lighter and cleaner, perfect for beginners and SUP paddlers.
Several schools operate directly from the beach, the most established being Kite Colico and Centro Vela Colico, both offering equipment hire and lessons from beginner to advanced level.
For Non-Kite Visitors
Even if you have no intention of getting on the water, the beach at Colico is genuinely pleasant — a long arc of fine grey-sand and pebble shore with clear, swimmable water and a backdrop of mountains that makes every photo look like a postcard.
The lakefront promenade has several relaxed bars and a gelateria (Gelateria La Vela) where the pistachio and nocciola flavours are made with real Sicilian and Piedmontese nuts — not paste.
Watching the afternoon kite session from a sunlounger with an Aperol Spritz is, frankly, a perfectly valid way to spend a Lake Como afternoon.
