Colico Weekly Market (Mercato di Colico)
Every Tuesday morning Colico's main square and the streets around Via Nazionale come alive with one of the upper lake's most authentic weekly markets — stalls piled with Valtellina charcuterie, local cheeses, seasonal vegetables, cheap ceramics and no-nonsense work clothes that tell you immediately this is a market for locals, not tourists.
What to Buy
The food stalls are the main event: look for vacuum-packed bresaola from Teglio, rounds of Valtellina Casera DOP, jars of mountain honey and bundles of dried porcini mushrooms foraged from the slopes above the lake.
Seasonal produce is priced well below supermarket rates — in late summer the stalls groan with figs, peaches and late-harvest tomatoes from smallholdings in the Valchiavenna.
A handful of stalls sell decent local wine by the unlabelled bottle (sfuso), which is how many Italian families still buy their everyday table wine.
The Atmosphere
By 9 am the market is in full swing and the bar on the square does a roaring trade in espresso and cornetti for stallholders and shoppers alike — join the standing crowd at the counter for the most authentic €1.20 you'll spend in Italy.
The market wraps up around 12:30 pm, after which the square empties with impressive speed and the town returns to its unhurried lakeside rhythm.
