Marché de Cluny (Saturday Morning Market)
Every Saturday morning the streets around the Hôtel de Ville fill with the earthy, cheese-scented energy of a proper Burgundian market. Local producers from the Mâconnais and Charolais bring everything from cave-aged Époisses to fat Charolais sausages still warm from the smoker.
What the Stalls Offer
The market runs along Rue Lamartine and spills into Place du Commerce, with around 40 stalls on a good week. Look for producers selling Mâcon-Villages wine directly from the domaine, goat's cheeses wrapped in chestnut leaves, and seasonal vegetables from the Saône valley market gardens.
A handful of stalls specialise in Charolais beef — the snow-white cattle you'll spot grazing in every field around town. Buying a vacuum-packed entrecôte to cook at your gîte is one of the great self-catering pleasures of the region.
Eat as You Shop
A rotisserie van parks near the church of Notre-Dame and slow-roasts chickens and potatoes from around 7 am; join the queue of locals by 11 am or the best birds will be gone. Pair a drumstick with a glass of Gamay poured at the wine stall opposite for a standing breakfast that no café can match.
The covered section near the market hall shelters a crêpe stand and a honey producer from the Cluny forest whose buckwheat variety has an almost smoky depth worth seeking out.
Getting the Most from Your Visit
The market winds down by 12:30 pm, so arrive before 10 am to catch the full spread. Bring a canvas bag — plastic is frowned upon — and small change for the smaller producers who prefer cash.
After shopping, the Rue de la République boulangeries are baking their last tournées of pain de campagne; grab a loaf and head to the abbey gardens for an impromptu picnic on the grass.
