Trattoria da Sora Olga

A short walk from the fish market, Trattoria da Sora Olga has been feeding fishermen, dock workers and knowing locals since the 1970s with a menu that changes daily depending on the catch. There's no website, no Instagram presence — just a handwritten board and some of the most honest seafood cooking in northern Lazio.

What to Order

Start with the antipasto di mare — a generous parade of marinated anchovies, battered courgette flowers, fried mazzancolle and bruschetta rubbed with bottarga. It arrives without ceremony and disappears fast. The spaghetti alle vongole veraci uses clams bought from the market that same morning; the broth is clean, briny and faintly spiced with peperoncino.

For a secondo, ask what whole fish they're grilling that day. Orata (sea bream) and spigola (sea bass) are regulars, cooked simply over charcoal and dressed with nothing but good olive oil, lemon and sea salt. Resist the urge to complicate it.

The Room and the Ritual

The dining room is small — eight tables, tiled floor, framed photos of the old port on the walls — and fills quickly after 13:00. Booking by phone the morning of your visit is strongly advised. The owner's son now runs the floor and speaks enough English to guide you through the board.

Finish with a glass of the house limoncello, made in-house from Civitavecchia-grown lemons, and a cantucci with Vin Santo. The bill will be considerably lower than a comparable meal in Rome, which is part of the point.
