Mercato Traiano
Tucked into the grid of streets behind the port, Mercato Traiano is where Civitavecchia's residents actually shop — a no-nonsense covered market buzzing with fishmongers, vegetable vendors and deli counters piled with local pecorino and cured meats.
Fresh from the Tyrrhenian Sea
The fish stalls are the undisputed stars. Arrive before 9 am and you'll find glistening trays of mazzancolle prawns, whole branzino, ricci di mare (sea urchins) and whatever the local fleet pulled in overnight. Vendors are chatty and will happily tell you exactly how to cook what you're buying.
The market is a masterclass in the seasonal rhythms of the Roman coastline. In autumn, porcini mushrooms from the nearby Tolfa hills appear alongside the seafood; in summer, fat San Marzano tomatoes and fragrant basil dominate the produce tables.
Beyond the Fish Counter
The deli section rewards slow browsing. Look for porchetta from Ariccia sliced to order, locally produced olive oil in unlabelled bottles, and rounds of Pecorino Romano aged to a sharp, crumbly finish. Prices are a fraction of what you'd pay in Rome's tourist-facing markets.
A ring of small bars surrounds the market building — grab a cornetto and a standing espresso at Bar Centrale on the corner and watch the morning unfold exactly as it has for generations.
