Sunset from the Doria Castle, Vernazza
Perched on a rocky promontory above Vernazza's candy-coloured harbour, the 15th-century Doria Castle offers the single most complete panorama in the entire national park. At golden hour the terrace turns into an open-air theatre as the Ligurian Sea catches fire below you.
The View
From the circular tower you can see Vernazza's entire piazza and church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia laid out like a map, with the breakwater, the fishing boats and the cliffside vineyards all in the same frame.
On clear days the silhouettes of Monterosso and Corniglia are visible to the north and south respectively, giving you a rare sense of the whole archipelago of villages in one glance.
Getting Up There
A steep but short staircase (about 200 steps) climbs from the harbour piazza. The ascent takes 10 minutes and the admission fee is just €1.50 — arguably the best-value view in Italy.
Arrive 45 minutes before sunset and claim a spot on the outer wall. Bring a light layer; the sea breeze sharpens quickly once the sun drops behind the hills.
