Kayaking the Sea Caves Below Manarola

The cliffs beneath the five villages are riddled with sea caves, natural arches and snorkelling coves that are completely invisible from the trail above — the only way to reach them is by water. Renting a kayak or joining a guided sea-kayak tour from Manarola or Riomaggiore is one of the most exhilarating things you can do in the national park.

What You'll See on the Water

Paddling north from Riomaggiore you pass under the Via dell'Amore cliff face, where the path is visible as a thin ledge 30 m above, before reaching a series of sea caves with ceilings stained ochre and green by minerals and algae.

The water between Manarola and Corniglia is some of the clearest in the Mediterranean — visibility can exceed 15 m on calm days, and the rocky bottom is carpeted with posidonia seagrass and darting bream. Snorkelling gear can be rented alongside kayaks.

In July and August, bioluminescent plankton occasionally lights the water blue-green at night; some operators run after-dark paddle tours specifically to see it.

Operators and Practicalities

5 Terre Kayak (based in Riomaggiore, Via Colombo) rents single and double sea kayaks from €15/hour and runs guided 3-hour tours (€55 per person) that include the caves, a snorkelling stop and a swim beneath the Manarola cliffs.

The sea is calmest between June and September; avoid paddling after 2 pm when afternoon winds pick up. No experience is necessary for the flat-water sections close to shore, but the guided tour is recommended for first-timers.
