Mercado de Abastos de Cieza
Cieza's covered municipal market is the beating heart of a city that takes its produce seriously — this is, after all, the peach capital of Spain, and the stalls reflect that identity with a seasonal intensity that supermarkets simply cannot replicate. Come hungry and leave with a bag full of things you didn't expect to buy.
What to Look For
From late May through August the peach and nectarine stalls are the undisputed stars, piled with varieties — Calanda, Paraguayo, vineyard peach — that rarely make it to export markets because they are too ripe and fragrant to survive long transit. Ask vendors to pick one for immediate eating and they will choose it at peak ripeness with practised precision.
Year-round you will find Murcian almonds sold in their shells or freshly cracked, local honey from the Sierra de la Pila, pimentón de Murcia, and handmade sobrasada from small producers in the surrounding villages. The cheese counter carries a good selection of regional curado and semi-curado.
The Social Ritual
Like all great Spanish markets, Cieza's Mercado de Abastos is as much a social institution as a shopping destination. By 9 am the central bar is full of locals taking coffee and a pastry before doing the rounds, and the noise level — vendors calling out prices, friends catching up across stalls — is cheerfully overwhelming.
The market building itself, a mid-20th-century structure with high iron-framed skylights, floods the interior with soft morning light that makes the coloured produce almost glow. It is a genuinely photogenic space even before you factor in the fruit.
