Castillo de Cieza (El Peñón del Castillo)
Perched on a rocky outcrop above the city, the ruins of Cieza's Moorish castle offer the most commanding panorama in the entire Ricote Valley, with the Segura river glinting silver far below and terraced orchards stretching to the horizon. The scramble up is short and the reward is enormous.
The Climb and the Ruins
A marked footpath from the upper edge of the old town reaches the castle summit in about 20 minutes. The path is rocky in the final stretch and requires sturdy footwear, but it is manageable for anyone reasonably fit. The ruins themselves — curtain walls, a partial tower and carved cisterns — date from the Almohad period, 12th–13th century.
Archaeological excavations here have uncovered pottery shards, coins and structural evidence of continuous occupation from the Bronze Age through the Reconquista, layers that the on-site information panels describe concisely. The site is unfenced and free, which gives it a wonderfully unmediated, exploratory feel.
Sunset and the Valley Below
The west-facing summit catches the last hour of sunlight dramatically, painting the pale limestone walls amber and throwing long shadows across the Vega de Cieza's citrus and peach groves below. Late afternoon in spring, when the blossom is out, is the single best moment to be standing up here.
From the top you can trace the full curve of the Ricote Valley — dubbed the 'Valley of Seven Villages' — a UNESCO-recognised cultural landscape of Moorish irrigation heritage that is easily explored by car or bicycle the following day.
