Piazzetta Vigo & the Column of San Marco
At the southern tip of the island, Piazzetta Vigo opens onto the lagoon with a granite column topped by a winged lion of St Mark — a deliberate echo of the Piazzetta San Marco in Venice, and proof that Chioggia took its status as a Serenissima satellite very seriously. At sunset the view across the water towards the barrier islands is genuinely breathtaking.
The column and the view
The Column of San Marco dates to 1786 and frames a view that takes in the broad Chioggia channel, the fishing fleet at anchor, and on clear days the faint outline of the Euganean Hills on the mainland horizon. It's the single most photographed spot in the city, and rightly so.
The adjacent Ponte Vigo, a handsome stone bridge, arches over the entrance to Canale della Vena and gives an elevated perspective on both the canal and the open lagoon simultaneously — position yourself here at golden hour for the full effect.
What's around the piazzetta
A cluster of bars and gelaterie face the water, making this the natural spot to stop for a Spritz Aperol or a scoop of local gelato after a walk along the Corso. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuinely local — this is where Chioggiotti come to watch the sun go down, not a tourist set-piece.
The nearby church of San Giacomo Apostolo is often overlooked but contains a fine 14th-century wooden crucifix worth a five-minute detour.
