Mercato Ittico di Chioggia (Fish Market)

One of the largest wholesale fish markets in Italy, the Mercato Ittico on Via Acqua Dolce opens its wholesale floor before dawn and its retail hall to the public from early morning — a vivid, aromatic spectacle of sole, cuttlefish, razor clams and the prized Adriatic scampi that end up on Venice's finest restaurant tables.

What you'll see on the slabs

The Adriatic fishing fleet that moors right outside supplies the market directly, so the fish is often less than twelve hours old. Look for moeche (soft-shell crabs, seasonal in spring and autumn), masanete (female shore crabs), and the fat local vongole veraci that are smaller and sweeter than their farmed cousins.

Vendors are used to curious visitors and will often let you taste a raw clam or explain the difference between a local branzino and an imported one — genuine market education you won't get in a tourist restaurant.

Buying and eating

Retail stalls sell directly to the public; bring a cool bag if you plan to cook. Several stalls also sell ready-made seafood salads, marinated anchovies and fried moeche to eat on the spot at the outdoor tables.

The market spills onto the adjacent Piazza Granaio on Tuesdays and Fridays when the weekly produce market adds fruit, vegetables and local Veneto cheeses to the mix.
