Marché de Chinon (Place Jeanne d'Arc)

Every Saturday morning, Place Jeanne d'Arc and the surrounding streets of the old town fill with producers from the Chinonais countryside selling wine, rillons, goat's cheese and early-season vegetables. It is the most authentic way to eat like a local in the Loire Valley without booking a restaurant.

What to look for

Seek out the rillons de Touraine stalls — chunky, caramelised cubes of slow-cooked pork belly that are the region's proudest charcuterie, utterly different from the rillettes you find elsewhere in France. Pair them with a wedge of Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, the long ash-rolled goat's cheese log protected by an AOC label.

Local wine producers from the Chinon AOC appellation set up tasting tables where you can try Cabernet Franc reds and the rarer Chinon Blanc before buying directly. Prices are noticeably lower than in wine shops and the growers love to talk terroir.

The market atmosphere

The market has operated in Chinon for centuries and retains a genuinely workaday feel — locals arrive with wheeled trolleys, bakers sell out of sourdough loaves by 9 a.m. and fishmongers offer freshwater Loire species like sandre (pike-perch) that rarely appear on restaurant menus.

A ring of café terraces around the square means you can nurse a café crème and watch the theatre of commerce unfold at a pleasurable pace. The flower stalls in spring, when peonies and lilacs pile up in buckets, are particularly photogenic.

Beyond Saturday

A smaller Thursday morning market occupies the same square if your schedule doesn't allow for Saturday. Several permanent cave-turned-wine-shops along Rue Voltaire are open daily and effectively extend the market experience year-round.

In July and August a night market (marché nocturne) occasionally takes over the riverfront Quai Danton — check the local tourist office website for dates as it is not advertised far in advance.
