Château de Chinon
Perched on a dramatic limestone spur above the Vienne river, Chinon's royal fortress is where Joan of Arc famously identified the disguised Dauphin in 1429, changing the course of French history. Three linked castles stretch nearly 400 metres along the ridge, offering one of the Loire Valley's most atmospheric medieval experiences.
History written in stone
The fortress complex actually comprises three distinct castles — Fort Saint-Georges, Château du Milieu and Fort du Coudray — connected by moats and drawbridges and spanning occupation from the 10th to the 15th century.
It was here that Henry II of England died in 1189 and Richard the Lionheart held court, making Chinon a pivotal site in both French and English medieval history. The keep of Coudray still bears graffiti carved by imprisoned Knights Templar in the 14th century.
Inside the royal halls
The Musée Jeanne d'Arc inside the Château du Milieu uses life-size holograms to recreate the legendary 1429 encounter between Joan and Charles VII — surprisingly moving and technically impressive for a medieval ruin.
Allow at least two hours to walk the full ramparts, explore the excavated Royal Lodgings and linger at the belvedere terrace, which frames a postcard view over the slate rooftops of the old town and the Vienne below.
Practical visit tips
Arrive early in the morning when low mist often clings to the river and the crowds are thin. The château is lit dramatically at night in summer, and the son-et-lumière season runs July through August.
Combination tickets with the nearby Musée Animé du Vin are available at the gate and save a few euros if you plan to explore both.
