Marché de Chantilly (Place Omer Vallon)
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, Place Omer Vallon in the centre of Chantilly fills with stalls selling Picardy vegetables, farmhouse cheeses, rotisserie chickens and armfuls of cut flowers — a proper French marché that locals actually shop at, not a tourist showcase.
What to Buy and Where to Look
The Saturday market is the larger of the two and draws producers from across the Oise département: look for endives de pleine terre (the region's signature bitter chicory), thick slabs of andouille from a charcutier who drives in from Vire, and unpasteurised Brie de Meaux sold in wedges so ripe they barely hold their shape.
A cheese vendor near the fountain usually stocks Brillat-Savarin — a triple-cream cheese from nearby Normandy that pairs absurdly well with a glass of Champagne — and will let you taste before you buy, which is both generous and dangerous.
The Flower & Bric-a-Brac Stalls
On the market's eastern edge, two flower sellers compete cheerfully with buckets of peonies, sunflowers and seasonal wildflower bunches priced at €5–8 — cheap enough to carry back to your Paris Airbnb without guilt.
A small brocante (antiques and second-hand) section appears on Saturday mornings between the food stalls, where you can occasionally find vintage racing programmes from the Chantilly racecourse, old equestrian prints and mismatched Limoges porcelain at non-touristy prices.
Eating at the Market
A Moroccan street-food stall sets up near the main entrance every Saturday, selling merguez sandwiches on fresh baguette for €4 — the queue of locals is your quality guarantee, and eating standing up in the sunshine beside the plane trees is one of those effortlessly good travel moments.
Several café terraces ring the square and open early to catch market-goers: Café de la Paix on the corner does a strong café allongé and a croque-madame that arrives with a proper fried egg, not a poached one, which matters more than it should.
