Château de Chantilly

Rising from twin reflecting lakes like a mirage, Château de Chantilly houses one of France's most extraordinary art collections outside the Louvre — and its 18th-century stables are so lavish they were built for horses that might be reincarnated princes.

The Musée Condé Inside

The château shelters the Musée Condé, where the Duc d'Aumale assembled Raphaels, Botticellis and the priceless Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry — a 15th-century illuminated manuscript so fragile only a facsimile is displayed, but it stops you cold nonetheless.

Wander through the Grands Appartements and the intimate Petits Appartements, where every room feels curated rather than merely decorated, each painting hung exactly where the Duc wanted it — a stipulation he made legally binding in his bequest to France.

The Grandes Écuries & Living History

The Grandes Écuries, built between 1719 and 1740 by Jean Aubert, could stable 240 horses and 500 hounds, and today they house the Musée du Cheval — a surprisingly moving tribute to the human-horse relationship across centuries and cultures.

Between April and October, equestrian shows called Les Journées des Écuyers take place inside the main arena, with riders in period costume performing haute école dressage against the backdrop of those impossibly ornate stone vaults.

The Gardens & the Grand Canal

André Le Nôtre, the same genius behind Versailles, laid out the formal French gardens here in the 1680s, complete with a Grand Canal, a labyrinth and the intimate Jardin Anglais tucked behind the main parterres for a wilder contrast.

Arrive early on a weekday morning and you may have the mirror-still canal almost to yourself — the château's reflection doubling in the water while hot-air balloons drift over the Forêt de Chantilly in the distance.
