Musée Nicéphore Niépce
Chalon-sur-Saône gave the world photography, and this riverside museum celebrates that miracle in full. Named after local son Nicéphore Niépce, who captured the very first permanent photograph in 1826, it holds one of the planet's most important collections of cameras and photographic history.
The Collection
The museum traces photography from Niépce's heliographs to digital art, with over 4 million objects including rare daguerreotypes, Leica prototypes and NASA moon-mission cameras.
A highlight is the reproduction of Niépce's 'View from the Window at Le Gras', the oldest surviving photograph, displayed with the context that makes it genuinely moving rather than merely historic.
