Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme
This 16th-century palazzo in the heart of Cavalese was the seat of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, a self-governing commune that managed the valley's forests and civic life for over 700 years — one of the oldest democratic institutions in the Alps. Inside, frescoed halls and a pinacoteca of Flemish and Italian paintings punch well above the weight you'd expect from a small mountain town.
The Building Itself
The palazzo's exterior loggia and stone staircase are among the finest examples of Renaissance civic architecture in Trentino; pause in the courtyard to appreciate the carved stonework before you even buy a ticket.
The great council hall retains its original wooden ceiling and painted coats of arms of the valley's founding families, giving an immediate sense of the political weight this institution once carried.
The Art Collection
The pinacoteca holds works by local painter Giuseppe Craffonara alongside Flemish still lifes and devotional panels that arrived via trade routes over the Brenner Pass — a reminder that this valley was never as isolated as its altitude suggests.
A room dedicated to the history of the Magnifica Comunità uses original documents and maps to explain how the valley controlled its own timber, pasture rights and justice system from the 13th century onward.
Visiting Tips
The museum is small enough to do justice to in 90 minutes; the audio guide (available in Italian, German and English) adds context that the sparse labelling alone doesn't provide.
The palazzo hosts temporary art exhibitions in summer, so check the current programme on the official website before you visit.
