To Hieu Street Food Strip
To Hieu Street is Cau Giay's unofficial dining room — a dense, lively strip where every door hides a different regional Vietnamese dish and the footpath is a permanent obstacle course of plastic stools, motorbikes, and happy eaters. This is where locals actually eat, not where they take tourists.
The Lineup
The street runs the full gamut of Vietnamese comfort food: bún bò Huế (spicy central-Vietnamese beef noodle soup) at Bun Bo Hue O Hien (106 C6 To Hieu), pho bo at Pho Bo Tran Toan (107 To Hieu), and a rotating cast of fried chicken joints, bánh mì carts, and chè dessert stalls that change with the season.
Parallel Nghia Tan Street is just a block away and doubles the options — between the two you could eat a different meal every day for a week without repeating yourself.
Student Energy
Because several of Hanoi's top universities sit within walking distance, To Hieu runs on student energy: fast, cheap, flavourful, and open late. Cafés and milk-tea shops are crammed between the restaurants, making it easy to linger over a cà phê trứng (egg coffee) after dinner.
The vibe is zero-pretension and entirely local — no laminated English menus, no tourist markup, just great food served fast on wobbly tables.
Best Time to Visit
Come at 7 AM for a proper pho breakfast alongside office workers, or at 6 PM when the evening rush transforms the street into a wall of savoury smoke and the stools are three-deep.
Weekend evenings are the liveliest, with vendors setting up extra tables on the pavement and the whole strip feeling like one long communal dinner.
