Foce del Torrente Conca (Conca River Mouth Nature Area)
Just south of Cattolica's built-up seafront, where the Torrente Conca meets the Adriatic, a small but surprisingly wild stretch of dunes, reed beds and brackish lagoon forms a natural boundary between Emilia-Romagna and the Marche — and a genuine birdwatching hotspot that most beach tourists never discover. Wildlife and Landscape
The estuary attracts migrating waders, herons, egrets and, in spring, occasional hoopoes working the dune vegetation — a treat for anyone carrying binoculars. The reed beds hold reed warblers all summer and the open water draws cormorants year-round.
The dune system itself, though modest, supports sea holly (Eryngium maritimum), yellow horned-poppy and the spiky marram grass typical of the upper Adriatic coast — a reminder of what the entire coastline looked like before concrete arrived.
Walking the Conca Mouth
A flat, easy footpath runs along the northern bank of the river from the beach to the old stone bridge on Via Adriatica, taking about 30 minutes return; the southern bank is in the Marche region and the contrast between the two administrations' management of the same strip of coast is instructive.
Come at low tide in the early morning for the best birdwatching and the cleanest light; bring insect repellent in June and July.
