Three Roofs Café
Sitting squarely on The Island in the heart of Castleton, Three Roofs Café is the kind of place you plan to visit for a quick coffee and leave an hour later, full and entirely content. Traditional home-cooked food, locally sourced ingredients, and a sunny patio that looks straight out over the Derbyshire Dales.
What to Order
The meat and potato pie is the thing to get — enormous, properly seasoned and the ideal reward after a morning on Mam Tor or in Cave Dale. Baguettes are generously filled, and the gluten-free options are taken seriously, with a separate fryer for chips and dedicated utensils.
The café caters to vegan and vegetarian diners with equal care, making it one of the more inclusive spots in a village where menus can lean heavily toward traditional British fare.
The Setting
The interior is warm and unpretentious — the kind of café that has been feeding walkers and families for decades without needing to reinvent itself. On fine days the patio is the place to be, with views across the village rooftops toward the limestone edges above.
Service is quick even on busy post-hike weekends, which matters when you are cold, wet and hungry after a four-hour ridge walk.
Before and After Your Visit
Three Roofs sits within a few minutes' walk of both Peak Cavern and the Cave Dale entrance, making it a natural bookend for a morning's exploring. It is also directly on the route between the village car park and most of the main attractions.
For evening meals and real ales, Ye Olde Nags Head on Cross Street and the Bulls Head are both within a short walk and serve hearty pub food in proper stone-walled surroundings.
