Peveril Castle

Perched on a sheer limestone crag directly above Castleton's market square, Peveril Castle is one of the oldest surviving Norman fortresses in England — and the view from its keep over the Hope Valley is worth every step of the steep climb up. History and panorama in one punchy package.

A Thousand Years of Stone

The castle was first raised in 1080 as a wooden fortification by William Peverel, an illegitimate son of William the Conqueror, and rebuilt in stone around 1175. The square keep that still stands dates from that rebuilding and remains remarkably intact given its age.

St Edmund's Church in the village square below was begun at roughly the same time, and together the two buildings give Castleton a medieval skyline that has changed remarkably little in eight centuries.

The View from the Keep

From the castle walls you look directly down over Castleton's stone rooftops, then out across the full sweep of the Hope Valley with Mam Tor and the Great Ridge rising beyond. On a clear day the landscape reads like a relief map of the Peak District.

The approach through Cave Dale — a narrow limestone gorge beginning just behind the village — provides the most dramatic arrival, with the castle ruins appearing high above the gorge walls as you climb.

Visiting Practically

The castle is managed by English Heritage and reached via a steep uphill path from the village; the walk takes around 15–20 minutes and involves some uneven stone steps. Benches are dotted along the route for those who need to pause.

The cave Dale circular walk combines the castle approach with a return via Peak Cavern, making for a satisfying 2.7-mile half-day loop that takes in the village's two greatest landmarks.
