Playa Castillo Grande
At the very tip of the Bocagrande peninsula, Playa Castillo Grande is a wide, sheltered strip of sand where local families swim in lake-calm water — quieter, cleaner, and far less vendor-heavy than the tourist beach just a few blocks north.
A Real Neighbourhood Beach
Playa Castillo Grande sits on the bay side of the Castillogrande peninsula and stands out for its cleanliness and organisation, making it an ideal spot for couples or families looking to enjoy a peaceful day by the sea.
The water is calm and shallow — you can wade out a long way and it stays gentle — which makes it especially good for children or anyone who just wants to float without fighting waves.
What to Do Here
You can rent a shaded cabana, hire a kayak or paddleboard at the nearby Karib Kayak & Paddle Center, and buy ceviche, fried fish, drinks, and ice cream from vendors who walk the sand — a full day is easy without ever leaving the beach.
Visitors also praise the beach for its stunning Cartagena sunsets, with the bay glowing gold and the city's skyline silhouetted behind the water.
Know Before You Go
This is a city bay beach — the sand is grey-brown rather than postcard-white, and the water is calm but not the turquoise of a Caribbean island; for that, take a day boat to the Rosario Islands from the city.
Most visitors to Cartagena stop at Bocagrande and never walk the extra few blocks to Castillogrande — which is exactly what makes it worth the detour.
