Castillogrande Malecón Sunset Viewpoint
The waterfront malecón at the tip of Castillogrande is one of Cartagena's most quietly spectacular sunset perches — no entrance fee, no crowds, just the bay turning amber while the city's towers glow behind you.
Where to Stand
Head to Puerto Bahía de Castillo Grande at the corner of Calle 6 and Carrera 10 Avenida Matuín — this is the northernmost point of the peninsula where the bay opens up and the full Cartagena skyline comes into view.
From here you can see large ships moving through the harbour, the green hills of Tierrabomba Island across the water, and the high-rises of Bocagrande and El Laguito lit up in the last light.
The Best Time to Come
Arrive 30–40 minutes before sunset so you can claim a spot on the low sea wall and watch the sky shift from blue to deep orange over the bay — local families do the same thing every evening, giving it an unhurried, communal feel.
The 7 Cielos rooftop in nearby Bocagrande is a popular paid alternative with panoramic bay views and cocktails, but the malecón itself costs nothing and feels far more authentic.
Combining It with a Walk
The malecón connects naturally to the Castillogrande boardwalk loop, so you can time a 3 km evening walk to finish here just as the sun drops — one of the most satisfying free experiences in the city.
A natural creek at the very end of the beach leads to a small lake; large pelicans roost on the rock breakers here and can be photographed at close range, a bonus wildlife moment most visitors miss entirely.
