Mercato Settimanale di Castiglione del Lago
Every Wednesday morning the streets around Piazza Gramsci fill with stalls selling local pecorino, truffle paste, fresh pasta, seasonal vegetables, and inexpensive ceramics from the nearby Deruta tradition. It is the most authentic slice of everyday Umbrian commerce you will find in this corner of the lake.
What to Buy
Head straight for the food stalls clustered near the covered market building: look for vendors selling lenticchie di Castelluccio (the famous Umbrian lentils), jars of black truffle cream, and aged pecorino wrapped in walnut leaves.
Olive oil from the Trasimeno hills is sold in unlabelled bottles by farmers who press their own Moraiolo and Frantoio olives — prices are a fraction of what you pay in tourist shops and the quality is exceptional.
Beyond the Food
Textile and clothing stalls line the outer edge of the market, but the real find for travellers is the small selection of hand-painted ceramic plates and bowls that local dealers source from Deruta, just 40 km away, and sell at significantly lower prices than Deruta's tourist boutiques.
Arrive by 9:00 to see the market at its liveliest; by 12:30 most vendors are packing up and the best produce is long gone.
