Mercato Settimanale di Castel Gandolfo

Every Tuesday morning the streets below Piazza della Libertà fill with stalls selling Castelli Romani porchetta, fresh Colli Albani DOC wine, hand-pulled mozzarella and seasonal produce straight from the volcanic-soil farms of the Alban Hills — a market that feeds locals, not tourists.

What to Buy

The porchetta here deserves special attention: whole roasted pigs seasoned with wild fennel, garlic and black pepper, sliced to order and stuffed into crusty rosetta rolls. The vendors are mostly from Ariccia, the town that holds Italy's IGP designation for porchetta, just 8 km down the hill.

Look for fragoline di bosco — tiny wild strawberries from the woods around Nemi — sold by the punnet in late spring. Alongside them you'll find local honey, dried porcini from the Castelli forests and bottles of golden Frascati Superiore DOCG at farm-direct prices.

The Atmosphere

The market runs from roughly 7:30 am until 1 pm and occupies Via Roma and the side streets leading toward the lake-view terrace. It's genuinely functional — pensioners with wheeled trolleys, nonnas squeezing tomatoes, children eating cornetti — with a handful of clothing and household-goods stalls rounding out the mix.

Come hungry, plan to linger and bring cash; most stalls do not accept cards. The bars around the market perimeter serve espresso and fresh-squeezed blood-orange juice, and by 11 am the whole street smells irresistibly of roasting pork and fresh bread.
