Lago Albano Lakeshore Path
Descend from the hilltop town to the floor of the ancient volcanic crater and discover a 10-kilometre lakeside circuit that passes Roman-era boat shelters, a sandy beach club, a rowing club used by Italy's Olympic team and dense oak woodland that feels nothing like the suburban Rome just 25 km away.
The Circuit Walk
The Sentiero del Lago Albano is a well-marked loop trail that hugs the shoreline almost entirely, with only one short inland detour around a private property. The path alternates between shaded forest track and open lakeside promenade, passing the ruins of the ancient Roman Emissario — a drainage tunnel cut by hand in the 4th century BC to prevent the lake from flooding Etruscan settlements.
The trail is flat and manageable for most fitness levels, though the climb back up to Castel Gandolfo town (300 m elevation gain) is steep whether you take the road or the footpath through the woods. Allow 3–4 hours for the full loop including the ascent.
Swimming and Water Sports
The Stabilimento Balneare Lido di Castel Gandolfo on the northern shore rents sun loungers, pedal boats and kayaks from June through September. The water is clean, deep and refreshingly cool even in August — fed by underground volcanic springs rather than surface runoff.
The Federazione Italiana Canottaggio national training centre sits at the lake's south end, and on weekday mornings you can watch Italy's elite rowers training on glassy water in the early light — one of those quietly spectacular travel moments that costs nothing.
