Belvedere di Castel Gandolfo
A stone railing at the edge of the old town's main square frames one of the most photographed panoramas in the entire Castelli Romani — a sheer volcanic drop to the impossibly blue waters of Lake Albano, 270 metres below.
The View from the Piazza
Piazza della Libertà sits right at the crater rim, and its belvedere terrace is effectively a natural balcony over the caldera. On clear days the view stretches south past the Alban Hills to the Pontine Plain and, on the sharpest winter mornings, all the way to the glinting Tyrrhenian Sea near Anzio.
The terrace is free, always open and flanked by gelato stalls and aperitivo bars — making it the natural social hub of the town. Locals gather here at the golden hour, when the lake surface turns copper and the far shore's forested slopes glow amber.
Best Times to Visit
Arrive just before sunset for the full colour show, but come back at midday too: the high sun turns Lake Albano an almost Caribbean turquoise that photographs brilliantly. The summer months bring sailing dinghies and rowing boats that add movement and scale to the scene.
Early morning in autumn is the hidden gem moment: mist fills the caldera below while the hilltop sits in full sun, creating a sea-of-clouds effect that feels more like the Azores than suburban Rome. Pack a coffee from Bar Specola on the piazza and stay for at least an hour.
