Pont Vieux Viewpoint at Dusk
The 14th-century Pont Vieux spanning the Aude River is not just a crossing — it is the finest vantage point in Carcassonne for photographing the floodlit Cité reflected in slow-moving water as the sky turns violet and orange. Locals come here every evening as if they've never seen it before.
The View & the Walk
Stand at the midpoint of the Pont Vieux facing east and you have the full silhouette of the Cité's towers framed by the river and the soft hills of the Corbières beyond. In summer the Aude runs low and glassy, giving mirror-perfect reflections from about 30 minutes before sunset.
The bridge itself is worth examining: its 11 arches date from the early 14th century and it served as the main gateway between the Bastide and the Cité for centuries. The worn limestone parapet stones are smooth from millions of hands.
From the bridge, a riverside path runs south along the Aude toward the Écluse de Carcassonne lock on the Canal du Midi — a lovely 20-minute evening stroll past houseboats and fishermen.
Combining with the Lower Town
The Pont Vieux connects the Bastide Saint-Louis directly to the foot of the Cité hill, making it the natural start or end of any visit. Walk across, then climb the Rue de la Barbacane up to the Porte Naudière for the full arrival experience.
The square at the Bastide end of the bridge, Place du Pont Vieux, has a handful of wine bars and brasseries where you can sit with a glass of Corbières rouge and watch the light change on the ramparts without moving a muscle.
