Parque Regional del Río Argos
Just 3 km outside the city, the Río Argos carves a dramatic limestone gorge through the Sierra de la Puerta, creating a protected natural park that most visitors to Caravaca never even know exists. The river runs clear and cold year-round, and the canyon walls rise to over 200 metres in places.
Hiking the Gorge
The most rewarding trail follows the left bank of the river from the Puente de los Moros — a Roman-era bridge — upstream for about 6 km through riparian woodland of willows, poplars and oleander. The path is well-marked and largely flat, making it accessible for families and casual walkers.
In spring the canyon floor is carpeted with wildflowers and the air fills with the sound of bee-eaters nesting in the sandstone cliffs. Golden eagles and Bonelli's eagles are regularly spotted riding thermals above the canyon rim — bring binoculars.
Swimming & Picnicking
Several wide, shallow pools along the river are popular for a dip in summer, particularly around the area known as La Poza Verde, where the water takes on a jade-green colour from the limestone minerals. The pools are naturally clean and the depth rarely exceeds 1.5 metres.
The park has designated picnic areas with stone tables shaded by mature pines near the car park at the trailhead — arrive early on summer weekends as these fill up quickly.
