Eastern Market

Operating continuously since 1873, Eastern Market is Capitol Hill's beating heart — a glorious red-brick hall where butchers, cheesemongers, flower sellers, and artists all trade shoulder to shoulder. On weekends it spills gloriously into the surrounding streets.

Inside the South Hall

The South Hall is home to 13 permanent vendors selling everything from fresh seafood and artisanal cheeses to handmade pottery — open every day except Monday. The star of the show is Market Lunch, a counter-service institution since 1978, famous for its blueberry buckwheat pancakes (known locally as 'bluebucks') and knockout crab cakes.

Weekend lines at Market Lunch stretch out the door, so arrive before 9 a.m. or go on a weekday. Grab a stool at the counter, order the crab cake Benedict, and watch the neighbourhood wake up around you.

The Weekend Outdoor Market

On Saturdays and Sundays, the plaza surrounding the market hall transforms into a sprawling flea and craft market with over 100 exhibitors — local artists, vintage clothing dealers, antique sellers, and food vendors from five continents. It's the best free show in the neighbourhood.

After browsing, duck around the corner to Capitol Hill Books, a floor-to-ceiling secondhand bookshop with snarky staff recommendations scrawled on every shelf. It's the perfect post-market rabbit hole.

A Living Landmark

The market building itself is a National Historic Landmark, designed by Adolf Cluss — the same architect behind the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building on the National Mall. It survived a devastating fire in 2007 and was lovingly restored by the community.

On Tuesday evenings, an open-air farmers' market sets up outside the hall, where vendors from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia sell local produce, prepared foods, and seasonal specialities.
