Puente Romano de Cangas de Onís
A slender Roman bridge — rebuilt in the medieval era but carrying a Roman soul — arches gracefully over the jade-green Río Sella, its keystone hung with a replica of the Victory Cross that made Asturias legendary. Standing here at golden hour, with the Picos de Europa as a backdrop, is one of northern Spain's great postcard moments.
History carved in stone
The bridge dates in its current form to the 14th century, though it follows a Roman alignment that once linked the old road through the Cantabrian mountains. The hanging cross — a gilded replica of the Cruz de la Victoria — was added as a symbol of the Reconquista and has become the emblem of Cangas de Onís itself.
Look closely at the arch's voussoirs and you'll spot medieval masons' marks, tiny signatures chiselled into the limestone by craftsmen who knew their work would outlast them by centuries.
Making the most of your visit
Walk down to the riverbank on the eastern side for the classic low-angle shot with the arch framing the mountains behind. Local kayak companies launch trips from just below the bridge, so you can paddle under the arch yourself on a half-day descent of the Sella.
The bridge is free to cross at any hour, but the light is softest in the first hour after sunrise and in the last 45 minutes before sunset, when the limestone glows amber and the river reflects the sky.
