Bukit Cinta Viewpoint
Bukit Cinta — literally 'Hill of Love' — is an open hilltop field near Amlapura where the full volcanic cone of Mount Agung dominates the sky with almost shocking proximity. Come at sunrise and you will understand immediately why photographers from across Bali make the early drive out here.
The Best View of Mount Agung in East Bali
Bukit Cinta sits just north of Amlapura town, roughly 30 minutes from Candidasa, and delivers what is widely regarded as the finest unobstructed view of Mount Agung in the entire eastern region. The volcano fills the frame completely, its slopes tumbling down into green rice terraces and coconut palms, with the Lombok Strait glinting in the distance on clear days.
There are two informal viewpoints within the grassy area — the upper field and a lower spot flanked by two distinctive palm trees about 20 metres down the slope. Both are worth exploring to find your ideal composition. A tiny roadside café called Paborito Coffee means you can sip a kopi susu while the mountain turns gold at first light.
Sunrise Timing and Getting There
The viewpoint is officially open from 7 AM to 6 PM, though the open field means early risers can arrive before the booth is staffed. The absolute sweet spot is the 30 minutes around sunrise when Agung catches the first orange light and the valley below is still draped in mist.
Public transport does not reach Bukit Cinta, so rent a scooter the night before or arrange a private driver through your hotel — the winding road up through Bugbug village is half the fun. Google Maps search 'Bukit Cinta Viewpoint Amlapura' takes you directly to the right spot.
