Kettle's Yard

Kettle's Yard is the most quietly radical museum in Cambridge: a former terrace of cottages where curator Jim Ede arranged 20th-century masterworks alongside pebbles, shells and driftwood as if they were simply part of a beautiful home. Walking through it feels less like visiting a gallery and more like being invited into a very thoughtful friend's house.

The house and its collection

Jim Ede, a former Tate curator, assembled works by artists including Ben Nicholson, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Christopher Wood and Alfred Wallis, displaying them in domestic rooms rather than formal galleries. Artworks sit alongside natural objects like shells, pebbles and plants, creating a uniquely serene and personal atmosphere.

The interior of the house has been left exactly as Ede arranged it. Visitors move through compact, light-filled rooms where a Nicholson relief might hang beside a window overlooking a courtyard, and a Gaudier-Brzeska sculpture sits on a mantelpiece next to a single white stone. The effect is quietly extraordinary.

The galleries and what's on

A major expansion completed in 2018 added a new contemporary gallery wing, a courtyard, a shop and a café. The modern galleries host free, changing exhibitions showing artists from around the world throughout the year, alongside concerts, workshops and family events.

House entry is by timed ticket with small groups — this keeps the atmosphere intimate and protects the collection. Book online in advance, especially at weekends. The gallery exhibitions are free and need no ticket.
