Cambridge Market Square

Cambridge Market Square has been a trading hub since the Saxon era, and it still buzzes every day of the week with around 100 stalls selling everything from organic veg and artisan bread to second-hand bikes and vintage jewellery. The Gothic spire of Great St Mary's Church looms over the colourful canopies — it's the most photogenic lunch spot in the city.

What's on the stalls

The range is genuinely eclectic: fruit and vegetable traders jostle with vinyl sellers, florists, clothes stalls, book dealers and gift makers. Hot-food vendors serve a global spread — dim sum, falafel, hog roast and fresh pies — making the square the most affordable place to eat like a local in central Cambridge.

Saturday mornings bring the fullest spread and the liveliest atmosphere, while weekday afternoons are calmer and better for a relaxed browse. A Sunday Farmers' Market adds organic vegetables, artisanal cheeses and fresh bread to the mix.

History and landmarks around the square

The plaza, also known as Market Hill, has functioned as a market since at least the 11th century. A major fire in 1849 cleared the buildings that once crowded it, opening up the space you see today. Look for the Gothic Revival fountain built in 1855, which marks the spot where Hobson's Conduit once piped fresh water to market traders.

Great St Mary's Church faces the square directly — climb its tower for a bird's-eye view of the stalls' white-and-coloured canopies laid out in neat rows below. The surrounding alleys are lined with traditional pubs where, famously, the Eagle on Bene't Street was the pub where Crick and Watson announced their DNA discovery.

Insider tips

Bring cash — many stalls still prefer it, though cards are increasingly accepted. Arrive before noon for the freshest food and the best pick of produce.

The square is pedestrianised and sits five minutes' walk from most of the major colleges, so it slots naturally into any walking itinerary. Use the Park & Ride rather than driving — parking in central Cambridge is expensive and stressful.
