Phnom Bakheng Sunset Viewpoint
Perched on a natural sandstone hill 65 metres above the Angkor plain, the 9th-century temple of Phnom Bakheng offers the most celebrated sunset panorama in all of Cambodia — a 360-degree sweep of jungle canopy punctuated by the distant towers of Angkor Wat glowing copper in the dying light. It requires a short hike but rewards you with a view that feels genuinely earned.
The Climb and the Temple
A steep but manageable path — roughly 15 minutes on foot from the base — winds through dense forest before emerging at the sandstone pyramid temple, which was built by King Yasovarman I as a representation of Mount Meru, the Hindu cosmic mountain. The five-tiered structure is studded with 108 small towers, many partially collapsed but still evocative.
Angkor Archaeological Park limits entry to 300 visitors at a time to protect the site; arrive by 4:30 p.m. to guarantee entry before the sunset rush. Your existing Angkor pass covers admission.
The View Itself
From the upper platform, Angkor Wat's towers are visible roughly 1.5 kilometres to the south-east — at golden hour the sandstone turns a deep amber and the jungle between seems to glow. To the west, the vast Tonlé Sap lake glints on the horizon on clear days between November and March.
Photographers should bring a mid-range zoom lens: the compression of a 70–200mm focal length pulls Angkor Wat's towers dramatically close against the orange sky. A small tripod is useful once the light drops.
Getting There and Staying Safe
Phnom Bakheng sits between the main Angkor Wat complex and Angkor Thom's south gate — most tuk-tuk drivers know it well and will drop you at the base path. The descent after sunset is done in near-darkness; carry a small torch or use your phone light, as the stone steps are uneven.
Elephant rides to the summit were permanently discontinued in 2020 following animal welfare campaigns — the climb on foot is the only option and is genuinely pleasant in the late-afternoon shade.
