Angkor Wat at Sunrise

Watching the sun rise over the five lotus-tower silhouette of Angkor Wat — its reflection shimmering in the long reflecting pool — is one of those genuinely life-altering travel moments. Built by Khmer King Suryavarman II in the 12th century, this 400-acre temple complex is the largest religious monument on earth.

Arriving Before the Crowds

Gates open at 5 a.m. and the best position is along the northern edge of the main reflecting pool, where photographers and early risers gather on the stone lip to watch the sky turn amber behind the towers. Arrive by 5:15 a.m. to secure a spot — by 6 a.m. the banks are packed three rows deep.

A tuk-tuk from Siem Reap's Old Market area takes about 20 minutes on empty pre-dawn roads. Agree a round-trip price the night before — expect around $15–20 USD for a full sunrise-to-mid-morning run.

Inside the Temple

Once the light softens, move inside to trace the 800-metre bas-relief gallery that wraps the outer wall, depicting the Hindu epic Mahabharata and the 'Churning of the Ocean of Milk' in extraordinary detail. Each panel rewards slow, close inspection — faces, weapons and mythological creatures emerge from the sandstone at every turn.

Climb to the upper terrace (modest dress required — shoulders and knees covered) for a close view of the central sanctuary and a sweeping look back across the jungle canopy toward Siem Reap. The steep stone staircases have rope handrails added in recent years to help visitors ascend safely.

Combining with Angkor Thom

A three-day Angkor Archaeological Park pass ($62 USD) lets you return at leisure and explore the wider complex, including the walled city of Angkor Thom and the face-tower temple of Bayon just two kilometres north. The Bayon's 216 serene stone faces are arguably even more photogenic in the softer late-afternoon light.

Ta Prohm — the jungle-reclaimed temple used as a filming location for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — sits a short drive east and is best visited mid-morning before tour buses arrive in force.
