Zavelstein Castle Ruins & Crocus Meadows
A short drive from Calw, the hilltop village of Bad Teinach-Zavelstein guards a set of medieval castle ruins that are dramatic enough year-round — but every March, the surrounding meadows explode into one of Germany's most extraordinary natural spectacles, as tens of thousands of wild crocuses turn the slopes purple and white. It is the kind of place that photo enthusiasts rave about, and most tou
The Castle Ruins
The Zavelstein castle ruins crown a forested hilltop and are freely accessible, offering sweeping views over the northern Black Forest valleys in every direction. The fortification dates to the medieval period and the remaining stonework — towers, walls, arched doorways — is atmospheric and well-preserved enough to feel genuinely ancient rather than merely ruined.
The ruins are a great location for history fans and photographers alike, and the surrounding hiking trails connect to the wider Black Forest path network. A hiking lodge near the ruins serves as a popular starting point for day walks and bike tours through the area.
The March Crocus Spectacle
Each spring, the meadows above Zavelstein become one of Baden-Württemberg's most celebrated natural events: wild crocuses — Crocus tommasinianus — carpet the hillsides in dense drifts of violet and white, typically peaking in mid-to-late March. The combination of the medieval ruins and the flower-drenched meadows is genuinely unlike anything else in the Black Forest.
Come on a weekday if you can — the crocus season draws crowds on sunny weekends. The village itself is tiny and charming, with a handful of places to stop for coffee and cake after your walk through the blooms.
